The concept of authority seldom appears in the Old Testament. It is used predominantly in the New Testament, where the word exousia [ ejxousiva] functions in at least four ways. First, authority is the freedom to decide or a right to act without hindrance. All such authority begins with God, for there is no authority except from God (Rom ). In Matthew , Jesus states that the Law and the Prophets referring to the Old Testament is authoritative and imperishable. Throughout His ministry, Jesus made clear His teachings, corrections, and actions were consistent with the Old Testament. He also judged others teachings and traditions by the Old Testament.

He pioneered a view of biblical inspiration and authority which remains widely held today by many Reformed and evangelical Christians. Revelation and Inspiration contains ten of Warfield’s most influential articles on the subject, as well as two appendices—one on the divine origin of the Bible and the other on the canonicity of the New. The term canon of scripture means the complete collection of books which are regarded as of Divine authority. The word canon in Greek means a straight rod, rule or measure. As applied to the Bible it means the rules by which certain books were declared as inspired and accepted as such.

It enjoys divine authority and prestige as the Bible of the indivisible Church of the first eight centuries. It constitutes the Old Testament, the official text of our Orthodox Church and remains the authentic text by which the official translations of the Old Testament of the other sister Orthodox Churches were made; it was the divine. the Divine inspiration of the Bible stands or falls the entire edifice of Christian truth.—“If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” (Ps. ). Surrender the dogma of verbal inspiration and you are left like a rudderless ship on a stormy sea—at the mercy of every wind that blows.

Thus, our first topic for study is the basis for this belief. Why do Christians believe the Bible to be a Book inspired by God. Our answer is found in the Bible itself.

The Bible Claims To Be A Revelation Of God. In summary, the authority of the Bible is established by the nature of God's words, the authority of his words, and the eternality of his words.

God's words are of such a nature that they perfectly reflect his own characteristics, elicit an irresistible response from us, and are personally identified with the person of Jesus Christ.

According to the Urantia Book, Christianity is the religion about Jesus as differentiated from the religion of Jesus. The Bible never claims to be an infallible authority.
